For the past few years, Hopkins High School’s Student Council has been working to rebuild tradition and spirit.
Despite only being the second week of the 2024-2025 school year, student council presidents Lucy Ferro and Bruce Lowmanstone have been working hard to plan a year filled with fun and strong communication from the council to the students.
“There’s so much that I want to change, or perhaps more accurately add, to the Student Council this year, especially with how we communicate with students. Some of that we’ve already started with and some of it’s still in the works. We’ve been trying to plan out as much of the year as possible and really hit the ground running as we go into the school year,” said Lowmanstone.
“This summer we had a lot of prep to do. We met with Ballard and Athletics multiple times to choose dates for our main events so that was taken care of in advance. We also met with the council to plan for the upcoming year and brainstorm possible new events,” said Ferro.
Coming back to school after COVID-19 shut down schools around America caused a dramatic difference in the environment of how schools were run and the student body that attended them. Specifically, at Hopkins, many traditions and the overall spirit of the school were damaged.
Throughout the past few years, the student council has been doing its best to bring back the energy and spirit that Hopkins has lacked.
The exciting activities and events Ferro and Lownmanstone have been planning have been a work in progress starting in the summer.
The prep work has paid off, as we’ve already had different events like Senior Sunrise, the first home football game, and a new newsletter executed successfully.
“I worked on developing planning documents for all of our events this year to pass on to future generations of student council. Jackie worked extremely hard to prepare the first edition of our newsletter,” said Ferro.
However, the presidents admit they still have hard work ahead of them.
“I do feel like there is a lot to change this year, and Bruce and I are extremely dedicated to these causes. First is the overall spirit and school culture at Hopkins, we want to improve school spirit and get people excited about school events!” said Ferro.
It is exhilarating to know how dedicated our student council presidents are to making this year the best it can be. Something to look forward to a little extra this year is the pep fests!
“I’ve always been very involved in the pep fests in my time on the council, so I’m hoping to finish out that streak with a strong note and work with the council to make the pep fests this year some of the best we’ve ever had,” said Lonwnmanstone.
