The HHS Royals continued their undefeated season with a 105-94 victory Tuesday night over the Lakeville South Cougars. After getting off to a slow start, the Royals were able to pull away in the second half.

The Cougars began the second half on a 13-5 run to cut the Royals lead to five, leading Hopkins coach Ken Novak to call for a timeout. After the timeout, the Royals responded and pushed their lead to as great as 16 points, putting the game out of reach.

Lakeville South were led by Jack Sorenson, freshman. Sorenson accounted for 44 of the Cougar’s 94 points. Kamali Chambers, senior, guarded Sorenson for part of the game. Chambers attributed Sorenson’s offensive outburst to a lack defensive intensity.

“We were playing lazy on ball defense on him (Sorenson),” Chambers said. “He felt no pressure and was able to be in his groove the whole game.”

The Royals were led by Jake Wright, senior. He led the Royals in scoring with 23 points, in addition to his 12 rebounds and 7 assists.

If the Royals want to continue their undefeated start, Chambers said improvement is necessary.

“We need to work on our rebounding, especially defensively. We can’t beat teams such as Apple Valley if we don’t rebound well and play solid team defense,” Chambers said.
