Girls soccer team shuts out Wayzata 2-0 in battle of the undefeated
Last year, the Royals ended the Trojans season with an upset victory in the section semifinals. That victory was the first one against the Trojans in 19 years. This year, led by a veteran squad, the Royals looked to prove that the victory was no fluke.
“Beating Wayzata was something we knew had to be done. After a team meeting before the game, we all got a boost of energy and confidence,” Rachel Lee, senior, said.
In the beginning of the game the Royals controlled the tempo of the game and kept the ball in the Wayzata end but had nothing to show for it.
It wasn’t until midway through the first half when Ashley Akin, freshman, was fouled in the box, giving the Royals got their first big chance of the game. Corbin Boyd, senior, capitalized on the penalty kick giving the Royals a 1-0 advantage.
Minutes later, the Royals extended their lead when Lee scored off the rebound from a corner kick. From that point on the Royals maintained their lead by pressuring the Wayzata defense and keeping the ball out of the net with the help of goalie Gretchen Patterson, senior.
“I’m really proud of my teammates because not once did someone back down or get lazy,” Lee said. That mentality from the Royals carried them for the last forty-minutes of the game.
Following the impressive 2-0 shutout win over the Trojans, the Royals move to 6-0-1 on the season. Next up for the undefeated Royals is the conference’s last place team Edina on Thursday, Sept. 11.
