The special day full of love and sometimes even embarrassment has finally arrived at HHS. Heart o grams are a HHS tradition in honor of celebrating Valentine’s Day.

An entire day of school is devoted to spreading the love, by students singing to their fellow classmates.

Heart o grams has been a HHS tradition for as long as Mark Czech, Music Department, can remember.

“It started as a fundraiser for the choir program and now has turned into more of a celebration among students,” said Czech.

Even with the constant disruptions each block, most teachers seem to enjoy the special day.

“It’s great and is always a little chaotic, but so what,” said David Williams, Language Arts.

Groups of students get together weeks before Valentine’s day to prepare for the early February auditions.

“As a whole I’d say my group has put in about 10 to 12 hours,” said Joey Mydra, junior. “You have to figure out a list of songs, pick the parts you want to sing, and memorize the lyrics.”

Lukas Jorgensen and Dan Sheldon, seniors, are a part of the Geoff heart o gram group.

“We started to think of songs all the way back in November,” said Sheldon. “We get the chords together then freestyle to create a cool sound. It’s a lot of fun to just kill it and make all the girls swoon.”

For Jorgensen, singing is not the only part that makes heart o grams fun.

“Watching the look on the person’s face who is receiving the heart o gram can be pretty funny,” said Jorgensen.

Geoff will be making their way around HHS on valentine’s day singing love songs with their own special twist.

“Lukas will be leaving them love struck,” Sheldon said.

Midori will also be performing in a heart o gram group as a part of the tradition.

“We have two songs this year that are going to be special with our costumes which will be a surprise on Friday,” said Aubrey Eull, senior.

Eull and Bella Javidan, senior, are two out of the eight girls who sing in Midori.

“This year Josie Ries, who is amazing on the piano, arranged all of our songs. Also, we have Zach Johnson beat boxing with us,” said Javidan.

Other heart o gram groups beside Geoff and Midori will be participating on Valentine’s day.

Not only the songs are entertaining, each group comes up with their own costumes as part of the fun.

“We are going as far as we can without getting in trouble with the schools rules,” said Alec Weissman, senior. “We want it to be funny and get a good reaction from the students.”

The HHS tradition will be carried on this 2014 Valentine’s Day with all new groups, songs, and costumes.
