Boys basketball preview: facing the Hornets

Kyle Miller, Staff Reporter

Thursday Feb. 11, the Royals will enter the game against the Edina Hornets as the third best team in the state and a 22-1 record.

The Royals are looking to complete the sweep of the Hornets after beating them on Jan. 8, by a score of 82-63.

After a win last weekend over Cretin-Derham Hall by a score of 72-68, the Royals look to bounce back to their 88.8 points per game average. Against Cretin, Xavier Johnson, senior, led the way with 27 points, while Vinnie Shahid, senior, and Ishmael El- Amin, junior, also contributed with 14 points each.

In Thursday’s matchup with the 13-8 Edina Hornets at the Edina Community Center, the Royals will try to slow down Will Moreton, senior, who is averaging 21 points per game. Walt McGrory, junior, is also an offensive threat, and averages 18.3 points per game.

The Hornets are coming off an 70-65 upset victory over the Wayzata Trojans. Moreland and McGrory combined for 37 of the team’s 70 points. The Hornets have won each of their last two games and look to extend that number against the Royals, who recently suffered their first defeat of the season to the Wayzata Trojans.

The Royals will rely on the offensive capability of Amir Coffey, senior, and El- Amin, who are averaging 20.6 and 15 points per game, respectively.

After the Lake Conference matchup with the Hornets, the Royals will travel to Minnetonka on February 16 to take on the Skippers before ending their regular season at home on the 19 against the Eden Prairie Eagles. The state championship hunt will begin from there.
