Growing up, every athlete envisions themselves hitting a walk off home run, catching the game-winning touchdown or scoring the game-winning goal. Last night, senior Corbin Boyd’s dreams became a reality in the second overtime period of the section 6AA finals.

Having beaten Wayzata only three times in the last 19 years, the Royals came into the game trying to snap their three-year section final losing streak.

The 12-3-3 Trojans came in looking for revenge of the shootout loss they endured to the Royals in last year’s section semifinals.

Just like in Saturday’s semifinal game against Armstrong, the Royals had to fight back from giving up the first goal.

The Royals got on the board five minutes into the second half with a penalty kick from Rachael St. Clair, senior.

The more minutes and seconds that came off the clock, the more the intensity rose with a state tournament berth on the line. Every fast break and every save had the abnormally large and vocal Royals student section in a frenzy.

Regulation ended without another goal from either team, putting this already nerve-wracking game onto a whole new level. The next goal would win the section.

The first overtime came and went without a winner.

Four minutes into the second overtime, the ball ended up on the foot of Boyd with a clear path to the goal, leaving her with the chance of a lifetime.

Jubilation ensued as the team surrounded Boyd and the student section rushed the field entrance gate at Wayzata Stadium.

Once the celebration died down, the two teams lined up across from one another with the medals and trophies in the middle. This year, the Royals were the ones with tears of joy in their eyes and the section championship medal around their necks.

The Royals will open up their first ever state tournament with a matchup against the number one seeded Eagan Wildcats.
