Although it is cold outside, the warmth is being spread inside the walls of HHS.  On Jan. 14, 11 National Honors Society members, with scissors in hand, prepared 30 fleece tie blankets.  The tie blankets will be donated to Project Linus.

Project Linus is an Illinois based company that donates handmade blankets and afghans to severely ill children.  The organization is named after the character Linus from the cartoon Peanuts, due to him always carrying a blue security blanket.

“Project Linus is a very clever name for the organization,” said Maggie Abel, senior and member of NHS.  “Linus always carried his blanket, and Project Linus donates blankets to children in need.”

Since founded in 1995, Project Linus has donated an average of 350 blankets each month to  hospitals, shelters, and social service agencies in all 50 states.

“I like the idea that we are giving these children something to make their situation a little bit easier.  It’s showing that people at HHS care,” said Margaret Stelzner, senior and member of NHS.

Each blanket was a different pattern.  They ranged from footballs to polka dots.

“I make fleece tie blankets at home for fun all the time so I figured why not do it for charity this time,” said Yamit Nachmias, senior and member of NHS.

After the blankets were prepared, they were tied by all members at a monthly NHS meeting on Jan. 16 and will be donated later this month.
