During the month of November, men across the globe participate in the phenomenon No Shave November. However, for many who partake in the event, the reasoning behind the act is unknown.

Originating in Adelaide, Australia, No Shave November was created by a group of 30 men who grew out their facial hair to support and raise awareness for prostate cancer.

During Movember, an individual saves the money that is usually spent on razors, barbers, or other grooming methods, and donates the money to charity. This campaign has been a success raising over two million dollars so far and the organization plans on donating more.

There is a difference between Movember and No Shave November. For Movember, one grows out a mustache, while No Shave November does not specify which type of facial hair to grow. Nonetheless, both were created for an altruistic purpose.

HHS students were eager to participate for the cause. Dylan Drone, senior, is currently growing out his beard to support his support of the movement.

“I am doing No Shave November because of two reasons: one, I want to support the awareness for men’s cancer, and two, I am lazy,” Drone said.

Drone is one of a select few who are participating in the event because not all teenagers can grow facial hair. Drone has sported his beard since the beginning of the football season and allowed it to grow to help the cause.

“Although I’ve had my beard for a while, people usually don’t ask why I have my beard. They just ask if they can touch it,” Drone said.

Unlike many, Drone sports his beard year round to raise awareness year round and he urges all men to do the same.

Raising awareness is hard to do because people don’t always think of the topic of cancer with someone growing a beard. Also people who are afraid to talk to others may have problems spreading awareness for the cause.

“Isn’t No Shave November just a thing where guys don’t shave for the month?,” said Elvie Johnson, junior.

Johnson is a part of a large majority that believes the event has no meaning. Feminist Led Activist Movement to Empower [F.L.A.M.E]  participated in No Shave November last year and donated the money they raised to ISU sexual assault prevention.

The thought behind Movember is if someone does not shave they can donate the cost of razors or a visit to a barber. This campaign has been a success raising over two million dollars so far and the organization plans on donating more.

All said and done, those who participate in this event have an excuse to grow a beard, but it is for a greater cause.
