Orange you glad they chose green?

Confusion over what the sophomore class color would be arose when the Student Government decided to go against the traditional color cycle. With homecoming approaching, they needed to make a decision. The class of 2016’s official color is green.

By approaching the student body differently, Student Government is experiencing many changes. However, with these attempts to make adjustments, the Student Government will still maintain some tradition.

“The purpose of class colors is to promote pride and spirit within the student body,” said Ms. Layne Bell, English.

The traditional color cycle was green, yellow, red, purple, orange, and white, making this year’s sophomore class orange. However, the class color wasn’t announced at Sophomore Orientation, which opened the opportunity to switch the class color cycle.

Student Government chose to switch the order of the color cycle because they felt red and orange were too similar and wouldn’t allow each class to show their own pride.

The commotion over what the color would be occurred because some students knew the original color cycle, while others knew about the switch. Student Government tweeted through their twitter account, @HHSStudGov, asking sophomores their opinion on what the color should be, orange or green.

“Student Government is ultimately an expression of what students want, so we do listen to the public opinion,” said Mia Berman, senior and president of Student Government.

Berman has talked with several sophomores, each one having a different opinion about what color they want. However, other sophomores don’t have a preference.

“I wanted orange because I could wear construction cones as hats for spirit,” said Ellie Fromstein, sophomore.

At the end of the day, Student Government wants to represent students how they want to be represented. Since the sophomore elections are happening this week, the upperclassmen on Student Government made the final decision. Sophomores will be sporting green at the homecoming football game next Friday, Sept. 27, against Wayzata High School.
