Homecoming Queen nominees campaign for the crown
Many traditions occur during homecoming week every year, but campaigning for homecoming court isn’t usually one of them.
Alexis Bernard, Chaniya Rogers, and Koree Walton, seniors, are the nominees for this year’s homecoming queen.
They’re also all good friends.
“I’m not going to let that stop me because at the end of the day, there can only be one queen,” Walton said. “If we have to run against each other, that’s just how it is. It’s not a matter of life or death, it’s just fun.”
Bernard and Walton campaigned for their nominations, handing out cupcakes and cookies during school, but for Rogers, it came as a surprise.
“All of a sudden people started saying they were going to vote for Ray and me, so it just kinda happened,” Rogers said.
For the past two years, the homecoming king and queen have been a couple. The king nominees this year are Harris Johnson, Bill Atkins, and Rayzhaun Peeler, seniors. Rogers is dating Peeler.
“Honestly, I feel that Chaniya and Ray should have a chance because they are a couple,” Bernard said.
For Walton, it’s about accomplishing something for herself.
“I’ve gone to Hopkins since seventh grade and since I’ve been here, I’ve never been involved in anything competitive,” Walton said. “This is basically the last good thing I can do for myself here before I leave.”
With all her credits, Walton will graduate on Oct. 31 this year.
“I’ve put a lot of effort into this, and for me, when I set my mind to things I go for them,” Walton said. “When it came to my mind that I wanted to do this, there was no going back for me.”
The 2014-15 HHS Homecoming Court will be announced this Friday during pepfest.
