On Nov. 5, the HHS and St. Louis Park combined girls hockey team took on the Red Wing Wingers in their first regular season game at home.

“It was a good start to the season with a win. I’ll admit, the first period was rough, but we just have to build off of it,” said Hope Docter, senior.

The first period started quickly with possessions from both teams and an eventual blind sided goal from the Wingers with two minutes left in the first, giving them the advantage going into the second period.

Period two was a back-and-forth battle with six total goals the whole period. The Wingers fought hard to keep their lead early in the period, scoring 37 seconds into the period to make the score 2-0. But the Royals pulled ahead with a hat trick by Olivia Mobley, eighth grader, in the 17 minute span. All three goals were scored at even strength.

Another key player in the second period was Kylie Hanley, sophomore, who assisted Mobley in her second goal and put one in the back of the net just eight seconds later.

Despite the two goal streak, the Wingers did not give up, scoring an equalizer with just a few minutes left to play in the period. But coming right back down the ice Mobley fired her third hat trick in, putting the Royals ahead.

The third period was played scoreless until the Wingers pulled their goalie and had a sixth skater on the ice. With just 48 seconds left to play, the Wingers skater advantage proved to be a disadvantage when Hanley scored on a breakaway to an open net.

“It felt good to score the winning goal and put our team up for the win,” Hanley said.
