With a 27-24 win over the Edina Hornets last Friday night, the Royals football team is well on its way to a Lake Conference championship.

Coming off strong wins against Minnetonka and Wayzata, the Royals entered the game as the favorite with a 4-2 record. After their first win of the season at Minnetonka, Edina came into the game with a 1-5 record.

The Royals led 17-3 at the half with touchdowns from D.T. Williams and Kevion McDonald, seniors and a field goal by Zach Savitz, junior. After halftime, another touchdown from Williams increased the Royals lead to 21 points.

The Hornets stormed back late in the second half with two touchdowns by Ben Boone, senior wide receiver. However, the comeback was too little, too late for the Hornets as Savitz kicked another field goal to put the Royals up 27-17. With under a minute to go in the fourth quarter, Boone scored for a third time to make the score 27-24, but Edina couldn’t recover the onside kick and the Royals held on to win 27-24.

With the victory over Edina, the Royals are now 3-0 in the Lake Conference and 5-2 overall. Up next, the Royals head to Eden Prairie on Wednesday night for their last regular-season game. With a win, the Royals would end the Eagles’ 24-game winning streak and secure the Royals’ first-ever Lake Conference championship.
