Harlem Globetrotter visits HHS

The HHS boys basketball team was surprised by Harlem Globetrotter star Corey “Thunder” Law on Wednesday. Law specifically recognized Amir Coffey, sophomore, and Grant Petersen, senior, for demonstrating characteristics during the recent State tournament that are valued by the Globetrotters.

Coffey was recognized for his 60-foot shot to win the State semifinal game, while Petersen was recognized for his sportsmanship following the loss in the State Championship game.

Law and Coffey have both received publicity for long-distance shots, as Law has the Guinness World Record for longest basketball shot at 109 feet 9 inches.

Law led the Royals through various activities done by the Globetrotters. These activities included a ballhandling drill and various shooting games.

“I like how he interacted with everybody and made the whole team involved, not just Grant and Amir,” said Treyvon Edwards. senior.

A Minneapolis public relations firm that works with the Globetrotters contacted the HHS athletic department to set up the appearance.  However, the appearance was a surprise to the Royals until Law appeared with the Globetrotters music playing in the background.

“We had a member of the Harlem Globetrotters P.R. team reach out to us.  They had heard about Amir’s shot and Grant’s sportsmanship, and they wanted to come and surprise the team to celebrate what they accomplished this year,” said Jolene Goldade, HHS public relations coordinator.

Law was excited about the appearance, and enjoyed meeting the team.

“I’ve heard so much about this group and I couldn’t wait to meet them.  It’s a great feeling and an unbelievable experience with a great group of guys,”  Law said.
