Royals girls basketball team poses with plaque after winning 6AAAA section championship. The Royals beat the Trojans 81-74.

Last night, when the buzzer rang at half time, the Royals girls basketball team found themselves in a position they are not used to being in.

Despite having beat them twice by a margin of over 30 points, the Royals found themselves down by 12 at the half in the section 6AAAA championship game against the Wayzata Trojans.

“This team hadn’t been in that position before, but we definitely responded very well, I think the difference was they were making everything and we were making nothing,” said Asha Bozicevich, senior.

Fortunately, the Royals proved their talent and determination and ended up clinching the championship by seven points, with a final score of 81-74.

“I think that some of our shots had to start falling in the second half, and we just stuck together to get the win,” Bozicevich said.

Paige Bueckers, freshman, had another big night for the Royals with 27 points, and Reana Suggs, junior, was close behind with 22 points. Angie Hammond, junior, and Dlayla Chakolis, sophomore, also contributed offensively, both scoring 14 points.

The leading scorers for the Trojans also put up large numbers, with 22 and 20 points respectively.

The win puts the Royals at a record of 29-0, and a shoe-in for the top seed at state.

“I am ecstatic, I am so excited to be going back to state,” Bozicevich said. “I think we need to prepare for every opponent like we have before, and not change anything we have been doing.”
