Antigone begins production at HHS

Beginning tonight and through Saturday, May 14, Hopkins Royal Productions will be putting on this year’s spring play, “Antigone.”

Directed by Ms. Natalie Foster, “Antigone,” a famous Greek tragedy originally written by Sophocles and translated by Jeremy Sams, tells the story of a young girl in the middle of an argument between her two brothers, both of which are next of kin to the throne.

“Antigone,” unlike many other plays that Royal Productions has put on in the past, includes heavier material. Sophia Peifer, junior, plays Nurse in the play and is excited for the production and the angle the play has to offer the audience.

“‘[Antigone]’ is the first tragedy that [Royal Productions] has done in a long time,” Peifer said. “We even get to have this huge fight scene in which we brought in Eric Sumangil from the Guthrie to to choreograph.”

Olivia Gulden, junior, who is playing the role of Ismene, found the play particularly more difficult of the audience to watch and react to.

“The play is very somber,” Gulden said. “It will leave the audience with not a lot to react to and to really want to talk about after watching.”

The play opens Thursday, May 12 and runs through Saturday, May 14. Each show is set to begin at  7 p.m. in the Little Theater. Tickets for students who bring their student ID are buy two get one free opening night.
