Ian Smith, senior captain, is a leader for the Royals wrestling team.
“My favorite wrestling memory would be my freshman year when I was losing 14-2 going into the second period,” Smith said. “I knew I had nothing to lose, so I put it all on the mat and ended up making the match tied 16-16 going into over time, and I took him down in overtime to win 18-16. Rallying 16 points in three minutes of wrestling after being down by 12.”
During the offseason, Smith works out, usually two to three times a day and six days a week. Smith works out at Williston Fitness Center and in the Lindbergh Center. Smith also plays baseball and rugby to stay in shape.
“I’ve been wrestling since my seventh grade year. Before I joined wrestling I was a bit of a hot head, but wrestling has taught me how to control my anger as well as keep my composure,” Smith said.
Earlier this year, Smith won the Hopkins Paul Bengston Invitational. He won in convincing fashion with two pins and a decision 3-1 in the finals.
“My goal for this season is to make it to the state tournament and represent my school and my community in a positive way,” Smith said.
