While in the library, it is customary for students to keep their voices down. But the HHS Media Center is making noise with its Read Across America program.

Read Across America, a Media Center initiative, challenges students to read books from all across the nation. Each of the 50 states have been assigned a different novel by the Media Center. Those books include “Dairy Queen” from Wisconsin, “Beautiful Creatures” from South Carolina, “Crank” from Nevada, and “Divergent” from Illinois.

“This is an incentive for fun,” said Ms. Victoria Wilson, Library Media Specialist.

In accord with the program, a visual map of America is currently being created to be placed in the Media Center.

Read Across America is not the only reading incentive the Media Center has constructed. If the Media Center does not have a copy of a book, students may place a request for that book. When the Media Center obtains it, the student who requested it is the first person to get to read it.

The Media Center also has made eBooks available to students. Students may find this reading outlet through the library tab on the Hopkins High School Web page.

Wilson hopes that Read Across America will get more students to read for pleasure.

“Students love to read but have no time with all the books they are reading for their English classes,” Wilson said.

All books appearing in Read Across America can be checked out in the media center.
