The Hopkins Royals were just a few plays away from taking down the Wayzata Trojans on Friday night.

After a promising first drive, Royals quarterback Oscar Johnson, senior, was intercepted on a deflected pass by Trojan defensive back Nick Krull. Wayzata quickly turned the mistake into the first points of the game, scoring on a one-yard run.

After a long drive, JaMichael Ellis, senior, ran the ball in from 14 yards out to put the Royals on the board. After botching the extra point, the Royals allowed two consecutive touchdowns to the Trojans.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the Royals trailed 20-6.

After another long, time-consuming drive, Ellis punched in a one-yard touchdown, pulling the Royals to within a touchdown with 8:29 left on the clock.

The Trojans then scored two touchdowns, effectively putting the game out of reach.

The Royals will look to bounce back against Minnetonka on October 2 at 7 pm at the Hopkins High School Stadium.
