HURT wins Lake Conference Championship
May 24, 2015
After winning the Central Regional Tournament this past weekend Hopkins Ultimate, HURT, came into the Lake Conference Championship game against Edina with momentum. The game, on Wednesday, May 20, showcased two of the top teams in the state of Minnesota with HURT ranked first and Edina ranked second.
“We came off a big tournament win at Centrals followed by a strong showing in the conference semifinals against Minnetonka. We felt good going into the Edina game,” Sam Kaminsky, senior captain, said.
The two teams have played each other five times already this year, with HURT winning all five. The stakes were a bit higher for this game as the two teams competed for the Lake Conference crown. Edina won last years’ conference championship game 16-14.
HURT came out of the gates with fire and intensity by jumping to a quick 3-0 lead. An Edina timeout couldn’t slow down HURT’s momentum as they coasted into halftime with an 8-3 lead.
During halftime, Jacob Elias, Sam Kaminsky and Trey Taylor, seniors, were selected to the All Lake Conference Team.
In the second half, HURT and Edina traded scores but Edina couldn’t mount a comeback. The game ended when Zach Shear, junior, completed a hammer throw to Will Cohen, senior, in the back of the end zone. Hurt took the game 15-8 and won the Lake Conference Championship.
“This win against a top instate team gives us more confidence and more fire to win State this year,” Kaminsky said.
In the girls Lake Conference Championship, HERT, the girls ultimate team, lost to Edina 9-7 on Friday, May 22.
The Ultimate State Tournament will take place in Blaine from May 30-31.
