Palkert’s strong performace leads Royals to opening day victory

On Friday, April 10, the boys baseball team kicked off the regular season by traveling to Irondale. The Royals finished the 2014 regular season with a 7-10 regular season record, but the team has many reasons to be optimistic this year. This is season number two with Mr. Pat Berger, head coach, at the helm, and the Royals lineup is filled with a combination of youth and experience.

Robbie Palkert, senior, started on the mound for the Royals. Palkert lasted 6 ⅔ innings while allowing only one hit and one run.

After Palkert came out, the Royals put in left-handed pitcher Zach Savitz, junior. Savitz got the final out of the sixth, leading the Royals into the final inning. For the final inning, the Royals put in right-handed pitcher Ben Whalen, sophomore.

Seven innings was not enough to decide a winner, so the game went into extra innings. The Royals scored in the top of the eighth and were looking to shut out Irondale in the bottom of the frame. Wahlen did just that, pulling off the save and starting the Royals off on the right foot with a win.

“It was a great feeling to start off the year with a win and also get the save in my first varsity game,” Wahlen said.
