Royals gymnast Junie Varin, senior, competed in the balance beam event in the the class AA individual state gymnastics tournament.

Although Varin had a great season, she didn’t expect to qualify for the top gymnastics competition in the state.

“In all honesty, I didn’t think I would make state. I was hoping to place in sections, and I would have been happy,” Varin said.

At the state competition on Feb. 20-21, Varin placed 20th out of 32 participants in the balance beam event

“I was a little nervous because there are a lot of people there, and the spotlight is on you. At the same time I was just happy to be there,” Varin said. “I had a lot of fun.”

Varin isn’t just any high schooler. Instead of taking regular HHS classes, Varin attends the University of Minnesota in the Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program. PSEO is a program that allows sophomores, juniors, and seniors to attend high school while earning college credits.
