Poems, songs, and reflections are a few of the selections from the poetry slam at Alice Smith Elementary School.
On Feb. 27, Alice Smith students and community members gathered in the Alice Smith lunch room to celebrate Black History Month. The poetry slam was called “Celebrating Heritage One Verse at a Time.”
The students had been preparing for the evening by organizing, planning, and decorating. Many of them prepared poems or songs to share.
Inayab El-Amin, Alice Smith student, began the evening by singing the Negro National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Aurora Parker, Ayaan Kowle, and Victoria Champion, fellow students, read their own poems or ones written by influential African Americans.
Congressman Keith Ellison was supposed to present on Black History but was unable to attend.
