As of late, a particular Twitter account has become a popular discussion topic amongst sophomores. This account had been impersonating Mr. Ryan Hogan, English, and posting comments that satirized aspects of his life.

“Students in the hallways asked me if I was on Twitter all of a sudden. When I informed them ‘No,’ they told me I was,” said Hogan.

Hogan was frustrated upon initially discovering the account.

“My name and my likeness were being used in a way that misrepresented me,” Hogan said. “Anything that is said can be attached to me.”

Many of the tweets referenced private matters, which was his main issue with it.

“The mentioning of the personal aspects of my life are still the portions that tend to resonate most with me,” Hogan said.

However, the majority of the posts were not particularly harmful.

“I don’t think the intention was mean; I think it was mainly playful,” Hogan said.

His frustration has generally dissipated since, now geared towards ensuring that this sort of event is prevented in the future. He also believes that this experience should be used to emphasize the importance of being careful on the Internet.

As a final word of advice, Hogan asks the creators of the Twitter to simply take it down.

“I’m not upset; I guess I would just like students to understand the ramifications of that on a personal level,” Hogan said. “I hope that people understand that there are, on the other end, human beings who are being affected by these actions, whether or not it feels like it in the moment.”
