Winter break sports wrap-up

While others were sleeping or on vacation during the 17-day break, student athletes were competing in their respective sports. Here is how HHS sports fared during Winter Break.

 

Boys basketball

In the Augsburg tournament, the Royals went undefeated, with convincing wins over Henry-Sibley, Chanhassen and a tournament championship win over Eastview. In the championship, John Warren, senior scored 31 points on his way to the tournament MVP.

Girls basketball

In the St. Olaf tournament, the girls followed the boys’ lead by going undefeated and taking the tournament championship with wins over Eagan, Holy Family and the Eastview team that the Royals previously lost to by five in overtime.

Boys hockey

A third-place finish for the Royals in the Schwan’s Cup in Blaine began the break on the right foot, but a home loss to Duluth East and tie with Grand Rapids finished the team’s five-game winter break.

Girls hockey

The Royals finished sixth out of eight in the Walser tournament located in Edina, going 1-2. The girls blanked Irondale but suffered a shutout loss to Breck and a 5-3 loss to Edina.

Dance

The Royelles were idle during break, with only practice in preparation for sections at the end of the month.

Wrestling

At the annual Paul Bengtson Invitational, six Royals medaled, and the varsity wrestling team placed third of nine teams behind Lakeville South and Minnetonka.

Nordic

On December 20, the girls and boys nordic ski team left for ski camp at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. The team stayed for three days, skiing at least twice a day. Although there was no snow in Hopkins, there was no shortage in Biwabik.
