JSU’s first female president begins a new future for the club

Sep 9, 2021

This Wednesday was the first in person, unmasked, and inside JSU, Jewish Student Union, event in almost two years.

Current presidents include seniors Aidan Swartz, Justin Kadet, Sam Goldman, Sam Levitt, and Sofie Schear, who is the first ever female JSU president at Hopkins. Not only is the board historically male dominated, but less than half of the participants in the club are female.

“In past years, it was mostly a club where only boys would come and it felt out of place being the only girl there,” said Schear. “The boys were very welcoming about letting me into the club and agreed that they should have more girls join; they just didn’t know how to get them to come.”

Her goal as the first JSU female president is to reach out to more girls in the community to show that it’s a welcoming place for people of all genders to join and be involved in.

“Hopefully my leadership role in JSU will motivate girls who want to get more involved and even shoot for leadership roles for themselves,” said Schear.

JSU meets every Tuesday after school in room W105 and hopes to see anyone who is interested attend their many meetings and events.
