Spring Sports Resume After Long Hiatus

In the midst of a global pandemic, students at HHS can still look forward to competing in spring sports.
At least for the time being.
After spring sports were canceled last year due to Covid-19, some students are nervous about the possible longevity of their seasons.
“There is definitely fear in regards to possibly getting shut down, but I think that the coaches and athletes are doing a really good job of following the guidelines and protecting themselves and each other,” said Yasmin Nachmias, senior.
Nachmias is one of the captains of the track and field team. She was also a member of the girls swim and dive program and will be continuing diving at Mankato State University next year.
“This season I’m really taking things one day at a time, while also trying to plan ahead,” said Nachmias. “We lost one year, so I’m really trying to work hard every day to get back to peak shape for competitions.”
Baseball, softball, track and field, boys tennis, lacrosse, synchronized swimming, trapshooting, bowling, and golf have all begun practices and games.
“Last year the season was canceled so we have all been working really hard to be our best for this season,” said Wesley Besikof, sophomore.
All of the sports are seeing changes, such as the requirement of masks during practices and games. However, the athletes’ sole focus is on competing and making this a season to remember.
“I’m excited to see how much all the guys have improved, and because last season was canceled, I haven’t seen them play in a while. It’s cool to see how much better everyone has gotten,” Besikof said.
For spring sport athletes, the ability to compete again brings back a sense of normalcy.
“Being back in season just feels like things are normal again, so I’m really excited to just be on the track with my friends and coaches again,” said Nachmias.
