Distance learning provides challenges towards gym class

Distance learning is bringing challenges to every aspect of our academics. In some classes, this presents more of a challenge than others.
Gym class, for example, is very difficult to run when not able to be in the building. At HHS, all students take Personal Fitness in their sophomore year.
After that, some students go on to take gym electives. These include Team and Dual Sports, Strength Training and Conditioning, Basic Self Defense, and many more.
Part of the problem with physical education courses being online was with the heart rate monitored tests students take every week. They were obviously not able to do these outside of school.
Instead, they are asked to record themselves several times a week walking outside, running, or biking. They send in these videos to their teachers in place of doing in class activities.
For Basil Lulu, sophomore, these challenges do not interfere with his ability to get the work done.
“I manage to get the work done each day even though it might not be my favorite thing to do,” said Lulu.
With classes like Strength Training and Conditioning, there is specific equipment needed to perform the activities done in the class. For the most part, students do not have this equipment, which complicates things. As an alternative, they are asked to be active and record themselves doing certain activities.
For Andre Kristal, sophomore, who is in Team and Dual Sports, he is able to persevere through this problem.
“While it is rather frustrating to not be able to take the real class I signed up for, it still does push me to go outside and be active during this quarantine,” said Kristal.
This is a new concept for everyone, and there are bound to be some challenges. Our students and teachers at HHS have been extremely understanding and we are adapting the best we can.
