Mar 4, 2020
The annual Apollo and Athena awards were announced on Feb. 28. Joey Hurth and Paige Bueckers were the recipients.
“I was very excited when I was told that I had been named the Apollo winner. I didn’t think that I would win, it was a big surprise,” Hurth said.
The award is given to the best male and female athlete in the senior class.
“I did not expect to win it, but I was not surprised that I did. I was happy to be nominated,” said Bueckers. “I had a good resume and I have broken a lot of records at this school.”
Hurth will continue his baseball career at Indiana State University, while Bueckers will take her talents to the University of Connecticut.
“I am very excited to play under Coach Geno, and become a better player,” Bueckers said.
Both athletes have hopes for the end of their high school careers. The girls basketball team prepares for their final section game, while Bueckers has high hopes.
“I want to go undefeated, win state, and hopefully get the chance to compete at nationals in New York,” Bueckers said.
Baseball season gets underway in a couple weeks, and Hurth is excited to get started.
“If we don’t make it back to the state tournament, this season will be a failure,” Hurth said.
