Campbell 5: Top five movies of 2019(so far)

Dec 4, 2019

The year is far from over and still many movies have been released that have been critically acclaimed and will go down as phenomenal films. Whether it is action, mystery, science fiction, comedy, or even suspense, the movies of 2019 have been as good as any year. Here are the top five movies of 2019(so far).

  1. Us

Visionary director Jordan Peele brings us a masterfully crafted piece where it left fans asking questions that will fill their minds forever.

Us shows the people of the world their worst nightmare: there is a secret underground world of clones that look just like us. They act like us, move like us, and are ten times as scary as us. Their goal is to show the world of their true potential and kill their human counterpart(unless they kill them first).

Peele follows a family of four who go on the worst beach vacation ever. Fighting for their lives, the family resorts to any weapon they can find to try and survive.

With brilliant performances from Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke, Us is an absolute mutch watch film of 2019

  1. Good Boys

One of the more surprising flicks of the year, Good Boys, was not only extremely hilarious but also looked into a world of 12 year old kids, raunchy at that.  The film was given an R rating, which ironically means the three main stars of the movie isn’t technically allowed to watch their own film.

Invited to his first kissing party, 12-year-old Max asks his best friends Lucas and Thor for some much-needed help on how to pucker up.

When they hit a dead end, Max decides to use his father’s drone to spy on the teenage girls next door. When the boys lose the drone, they skip school and hatch a plan to retrieve it before Max’s dad can figure out what happened.

If you need something to laugh at and like inappropriate jokes, Good Boys is the perfect film for you and I seriously recommend seeing it with your friends. Not your mom, though I did see that in the theater when I went.

  1. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

The newest film in the Quentin Tarantino universe proves to be another fruitful one. Coming into the movie I knew it was going to be good just from the cast. Leonardo Dicaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie lead this film and they also carry it.

The plot is basically the life of two hollywood stars, the troubles they go through, and at the end, a attempted murder. Dicaprio’s character, Rick Dalton,  is made up but Robbie plays late great actress Sharon Tate. Tate was murdered by the Manson family in August of 1969.

However, in the movie, the killers go to Dalton’s house where he and Cliff Booth(Pitt) are staying.

I won’t give too much away but if you are into a fun, action, and all around great movie, check out Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

  1. Avengers: Endgame

The final film in Marvel’s Infinity Saga did not disappoint. One of the only movies this year where I laughed, I thought, and I cried. While the movie played with my emotions, I thoroughly enjoyed every single minute.

The scene where the portals are opening and everyone comes back from the dust and is ready to fight Thanos might be the greatest moment in cinematic history. However, the tears really came during, spoiler alert, Black Widow’s death scene. It didn’t end their though.

When Tony Stark took his last breath I could hear the crying from the theater, one of the greatest characters in the history of film just died. Robert Downey Jr was the perfect actor to play Iron Man, he was born to be in that role.

If you live under a rock and somehow haven’t seen this movie, what are you doing with your life? Seriously, watch this movie and then watch it again because it was that beautiful of a film.

  1. Joker

The top movie of the year(so far) goes to Joker. Unless Rise of Skywalker or Knives Out are remarkable, this is going to stay at the top of my list.

Joaquin Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck, who is an aspiring comedian and current clown. Fleck lives with his mother and suffers from a condition where he can’t stop laughing at random points during the day.

Fleck’s life turns when he goes to a comedy club and before he can even tell a joke, he starts laughing and can’t stop. Fleck gets noticed by legendary talk show host Murray Franklin(Robert De Niro) and goes on his show.

Without giving too much away, Fleck fulfills his destiny and becomes the clown prince of crime we all know and hate(secretly love) the Joker. The film leaves you with a lot of questions and luckily, some answers. Joker has a sequel coming out hopefully sometime soon.

Joker is a film that will definitely change your mind on mental health and re make the ways normal films are made.
