The Masked Singer takes country by surprise
Jan 14, 2019
Over winter break the conversation regarding TV or film seemed to be surrounding Bird Box and Aquaman, however an underrated hit called The Masked Singer premiered to over 12 million viewers.
A total of 12 celebrities will appear and compete on the show over ten episodes. Hosted by Nick Cannon, with panelists Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke, The Masked Singer is a top-secret singing competition in which celebrities face off against one another while shrouded from head to toe in an elaborate costume, concealing their identity.
The Wednesday, 9 p.m. time slot for the show is almost as strange as the costumes that these supposed “A-list” celebrities are sporting. So far, the costumes range from peacocks, to unicorns, and even monsters.
With each performance, the host, panelists, audience, viewers and even the other contestants are left guessing who the singer is behind the mask. Each week, a singer is eliminated and then reveals his or her true identity.
A collective vote between audiences and judges determines which singers move on, as well as revealing the identity of the loser.
Now the loser of the premiere episode, spoiler alert, was NFL, wide receiver, Antonio Brown.
The range of vocal talent is also interesting. The 12 competitors are said to have a combined 65 Grammy nominations, 16 multi-Platinum albums, 16 Emmy nominations, 9 Broadway shows, 4 Super Bowl titles, and 4 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
While the premiere episode opened to mixed reviews, critics applaud the unique and zany tone.
Both audiences and critics are eagerly anticipating the next celebrity to be revealed.
