New senior advisory teachers shake up senior schedules
Sep 25, 2018
The senior schedule caused some talk as students noticed that they were put into different advisories than they’d been in for the past two years. As seniors looked at their schedules, they noticed that they no longer had the same advisor and that they were in different rooms. This change has made many seniors confused as to why the change was made and what it’s supposed to accomplish.
Advisories are no longer sorted by alphabetical order of last name and seem to be randomly assigned. The change was made to create an environment where teachers who teach mainly senior classes will have students that are seniors for advisory. It makes an easier system for students to get to know senior teachers and each other.
“We saw the benefit for having students have the same advisor for three years, but thought that having advisors for each grade level would be better, students can use them as resources for their grade level classes,” said Kelly Tennison, Associate Principal.
Tennison worked with other administration over the summer to come up with the plan and execute for the school year. Most students were affected by the change, but certain groups were left alone, for example, students in the Hopkins Alternative Program will have the same advisors as before.
“The change was made to put students in advisories with teachers that teach their grade level, we made who was in each advisory completely random, it was just so much easier than separating by alphabetical order,” said Tennison.
There hasn’t been any noticeable opposition to the change, so hopefully it will benefit students in the long run and make advisors lives easier.
