Why did you decide to run for President of HHS Student Council?

I am running for student council president because I really want to close the gap and make a connection between student council, the students, and their wants. In past years, there hasn’t been as much representation of what students have wanted and there hasn’t been much access to the meetings. I also want to really hear our faces and pep fests and school events towards things that students actually want to attend.

What is one specific initiative that you want to bring up and have Student Council work on next year?

I think we could work on bringing more unity to the school and making everyone feel like they belong, because a lot of times there are people that never really feel like they have a moment where they look around and feel like they are apart of something big. Sometimes you notice that there is separation between the classes so I want to work on feeling like we are one whole student body rather than very separated classes.

How do you feel about the election being open to the entire HHS student body?

I think it’s a really big step in getting people more involved in what we do because a lot of students don’t know what we are about. I think we could have done a better job this year of opening ourselves up more so people would know more about the candidates going into the election, but I think this is definitely something that needed to happen.

How are you going to work to make Student Council more transparent in the future?

Well, we are working on our website more and getting out meeting minutes up. And though we weren’t able to execute it this year, I had an idea of a fishbowl or a panel that student council could run where we could invite people and they could share ideas that they had or express things they wanted to see at a pep fest or dance. It would allow us to hear from the students directly and get feedback from them.

What something you think Student Council as a whole could improve on?

I think we could improve on us working together as a team, more so. If we can do that I think it will translate to the whole school working better together.
