On Wednesday, National Signing Day took over the Lindbergh Center. Three athletes decided which school they would bring their talents to in the upcoming year. Seniors, Nico Shirley, soccer, Samantha Horowitz, swimming, and Sophia Haley, rugby, all committed to their respective schools.

Nico Shirley has spent four years on the varsity soccer team and currently plays club soccer with Minneapolis United. He captained the team and netted a career-high three goals during his senior campaign. On Wednesday, he signed onto the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN.

“This past season they (the University of St. Thomas) went to the Elite Eight and the season before that the Final Four, so I think that was a big drawing point for me to be a part of their program,” Shirley said.

Samantha Horowitz is a part of the girls swim and dive program. She signed onto Skidmore College, a liberal arts school in Saratoga Springs, NY. Horowitz had mixed emotions about the move to the East Coast.

“I’m a little nervous since New York is so different from here, but I think it’ll be exciting,” Horowitz said.

Sophia Haley is a member of the girls rugby team. As a junior, her team won the 2017 MN State Championship in both the 7’s and the 15’s along with the 2017 Midwest Club Championships in Elkhart, IN. She confirmed that she would play for Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH.

Joining one of the top rugby program’s in the nation, Haley set the bar high for her college career.

“I want to win a NCAA title with them. I also would love to be on an All-American team at some point in my college career,” Haley said.

These three stars will all look to make immediate impact, both in the classroom and in the athletic programs, and will look to carry with them the lessons that HHS has taught them.
