HHS Gender Sexuality Alliance hosts Drag Queen Bingo
Jan 19, 2018
On Friday, Jan.19, the HHS’ Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) club is hosting its annual Drag Queen Bingo located at Eisenhower Wetlands Café.
Last year around 70-80 students came to the event, but not all were HHS students. GSA events are also open to neighboring schools–all you have to do is show a valid school ID.
“We don’t do Drag Queen Bingo just as a way to raise money for QROM (Queer Prom), an event held at the end of the year, but we do it because it’s fun,” said President of GSA, Armand Martinez, senior.
Before entering, GSA charges around $3, which is required to get in, but students are encouraged to come dressed in drag, ready to participate in the fun events including BINGO, lip singing, and drag racing where students can race each other to see how fast they can dress up in drag. At the end of the busy night, the final activity, favored by many students, is the teacher drag race competition.
HHS is one of the few schools in the Minneapolis area that is able to have an open GSA community at their school.
“I don’t feel like kids have to hide here at HHS,” said David Williams, GSA adviser and Language Arts teacher.
GSA has weekly meetings every Tuesday after school at 2:45pm in W117, to plan events, and have open conversations on challenges that are happening in students lives.
