HHS students say “aye” to Model Assembly
Jan 11, 2018
Model Assembly is a four day conference where the youth of Minnesota from grades eight through 12 have the opportunity to be part of a mock government similar to Minnesota’s own.
Adam Rothman, West Junior High freshman, was a participant at the 2018 conference that took place over winter break. He was one of a handful of delegates who attend Hopkins Public Schools.
“My favorite parts of Model Assembly were overriding the governor’s veto of my bill, learning about parliamentary procedure and meeting new people,” Rothman said.
All delegates stayed at the Hilton hotel in downtown Minneapolis and used the skyway system for meals. Some delegates went to the Minnesota State Capitol during the day, which taught them to be respectful, independent, and punctual.
Delegates represent different areas of government. Some titles of Model Assembly include Cabinet member, Lobbyist, Governor, Judge, and Floor Leader. Delegates also had the opportunity to run for office in hopes of convincing their peers to elect them as their leaders.
Activities such as a talent show, a dance, crafts, board games, movie showings, and an opportunity to do a community service project added to the overall Model Assembly experience.
The price of Model Assembly can be difficult for some families to afford, but Model Assembly is very generous with financial aid and scholarships. In fact, one in four delegates will receive financial assistance.
If this sounds appealing, consider saying aye, and register for the 2019 Model Assembly.
