Last night, Dec. 7, the boys’ basketball team earned their first win of the season in a blowout win 95-53 against the Sauk-Rapids Rice Storm.

After a loss in their first game to a strong Cretin-Derham Hall team, the Royals were able to bounce back. A big thing for the Royals in this game was to not get down early. In the game against Cretin-Derham Hall, the Royals were down 5-21 early in the game, this game they were able to start strong.

Joe Hedstrom, senior, was able to get into double digits in points after struggling in his first game; he was able to score 11 points. Zeke Nnaji, junior, was again able to lead the Royals with 22 points. Kerwin Walton, sophomore, was feeling hot from the three point line and dropped 15 points in just his second game with the Royals.

On the other side, the Royals’ big guys were able to keep the Bemidji State University commit pretty quiet. Cody Landwehr, senior, was held to only 13 points, which led the Storm in points.

The Royals next game is against the DeLaSalle Islanders on Sat., Dec. 9. The Islanders are also 1-1 and coming off a win, theirs being against the Concordia Academy Beacons.

The Islanders are being led by Gabe Kalscheur, senior, who is averaging 24.5 points per game. Kalscheur is committed to the University of Minnesota and is ranked fourth in the state of Minnesota, according to 247Sports.

This will bring another test to the Royals’ guards after Jaeden King, junior, from Cretin-Derham Hall scored 22 points on them.
