Yesterday, Sept. 12, the Royals took on the Edina Hornets in an intense Lake Conference matchup, setting the tone for the season.

The Hornets were looking to sting the Royals after coming off a hefty loss from them last season.

The Royals started off the first set with an ongoing battle, that eventually resulted in the Royals coming out on top. Both teams played strong, but it took 14 extra volleys for the Royals to take the win, with a final score of 33-31.

“In the first set, we struggled to shut down their hitters, but we played a lot more cohesively in the second and third sets,” said Jane Nelson, senior captain.

As Nelson said, in the second set, the Royals turned on the jets and found more success. Their offense began clicking as the Hornets struggled to return the Royal’s spikes. Their improvement showed up on the scoreboard, with the Royals’ dominating final score of 25-15.

The last set was closer, resulting in a win for the Royals but not without a fight from the Hornets. The Hornets rallied and got their offense going, scoring 22 points. The Hornets still struggled with the Royals scoring, and fell by a close margin, 25-22.

“Overall, we had a good game,” Nelson said. “When we were serving and swinging aggressively we were successful.”
