Op/Ed: Yoga and Meditation

Jan 12, 2018

Three deep breaths in, 1……2…..3….., then three deep breaths out, 1…….2…….3….. You open your eyes slowly and are welcomed back into the world with a gentle peace of mind; a wash of relief floods over you like a wave. This is the feeling directly after meditation, and is unmatched by any other practice.

This exercise of clearing your mind can not only serve to benefit your body, by relieving tension and strengthening your immune system, as well as bringing mental clarity. This source of relaxation can make everyday life a breeze- and with only dedicating ten minutes a day to the practice.

Another practice that can help to heal both one’s physical and mental state is yoga. The incredible thing about yoga is that there are so many different types including Ashtanga, which is always the same, Vinyasa Flow, which is a gentle practice (great for beginners), and Bikram, which is a hot yoga. The important thing about this practice is making it your own, adjusting when needed, and being gentle with yourself when first starting out.

Both of these practices are quite beneficial for aligning your body and mind, and bringing a sense of clarity. It sharpens your mind, and awakens every inch of your body. The feeling after either of these practices is not comparable to any other feeling that I have experienced in this lifetime.

After every yoga class, or after every time I get up from meditation, I feel completely electric. It leaves you feeling refreshed, aligned, and brand new. If you have even an extra 10 minutes a day to dedicate to your well being, I would highly recommend either of these two practices.
