Students at HHS join together for Vegan Club

Oct 6, 2017

Each year, HHS welcomes many new and exciting clubs. Veg Club, is one of multiple new clubs here at HHS this fall.

Founded by vegan Lizzy Sirianni, junior, with vegetarian Nathalee Morse as the advisor, Veg Club is working to get better vegan and vegetarian options in the lunchroom, along with a list of allergens (dairy and egg) on items in the cafeteria.

“I became a vegan over the summer, and I really wanted to find other people at the high school who were vegan or vegetarian,” Sirianni said. “I wanted to give them a community where we can support each other.

Applying to start your own club here at HHS is a fairly easy process, but having the courage to apply can be the hard part. For Sirianni, it was both nerve wracking and exciting.

“I was very nervous and excited about starting a club. I was mostly nervous that other people wouldn’t think it was a great idea and vegans and vegetarians wouldn’t be interested,” Sirianni said.

Veg Club met for the first time on Friday, September 29, which also happened to be National Hug a Vegetarian Day. The club plans to meet every Friday until it is determined what projects they will be working on for the year.

“(The purpose of Veg Club is) to give a safe community to people who are vegan and vegetarian. It’s for them to come together, as well as invite other non-vegans and vegetarians to come check it out and see what it’s about, and how it’s really not that bad,” Sirianni said.

Veg Club plans to host its next meeting on Friday, October 6 at 7:15am, in room S152.
