Chase Johnson, senior captain, will be playing in his fourth season on the varsity boys tennis team. Johnson was selected as a captain at last season’s banquet.

“I have an expectation that is very high for this year’s team,” Johnson said.  “I’m really going to get on guys if they don’t have a positive attitude.”

Johnson was the number two singles player last year and is now taking on the number one singles responsibility. He was selected onto the all-conference team and went to state for doubles as a junior.

“One of my personal goals is to make to state for singles. That’s been a goal of mine for a while now, and I feel that it’s achievable,” Johnson said.

There are big shoes to fill for Johnson. Manfred Barrios, 2014 HHS alumnus, was an all-state talent who carried the team through the section last year.

“It’s always tough losing a player like that. I know I’ll be taking his place this year, so I’ll have to step up my game and really lead by example,” Johnson said.

Johnson knows he’s next to help lead the team through stiff competition in the Lake Conference.

“Chase is really supportive and good at picking people up and staying positive. He creates a happy, positive atmosphere which is really important for a captain to have,” said Curran Martin, another senior captain.

Overall, Johnson feels that this season is going to be successful in terms of wins and losses.

“I think guys are looking good and ready to step up in order to help us get a good seed at sections,” Johnson said. “We really have a solid group of guys, and with the right attitude, we have a chance for big time success.
